There are an estimated 60,799 pre-diabetic people in Suffolk and a further 32,369 in North East Essex, which is 12% of the total adult population in the region. Also, nationally, every two minutes someone finds out they have Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is largely caused by lifestyle factors which can be changed to prevent or reduce your chances of developing the condition. People who carry excess weight are at increased risk because their blood sugar levels are often slightly higher than they should be and fall into the ‘pre-diabetic’ range. If blood sugars remain at this level, patients are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.
NHS Suffolk and North East Essex has partnered with Xyla Health and Wellbeing to deliver the National Diabetes Prevention Programme free to adults with raised blood sugar. People in Suffolk and North East Essex have lost the weight of just over two double decker buses thanks to the National Diabetes Prevention Programme – that’s a whopping 25,200kg or 3,968 stone!
You can easily check how at risk YOU are of developing Type 2 diabetes at https://sneewellbeing.org.uk/diabetes-prevention/.
You may be eligible for free support. Please do share this with anyone, as anyone is eligible for the programme if they are high risk.
