The Knife Angel is coming to Colchester – A thought provoking sculpture made of 100,000 seized blades which is helping to educate, inform and raise awareness of all forms of violence and thoughtless actions in the UK.
Colchester City Council will be hosting the Knife Angel for the month of October 2023. It will be located in Balkerne Gardens in front of ‘Jumbo’ the iconic Victorian Water Tower.
They are looking for volunteers to talk to people but more importantly listen and engage with visitors enquires and personal stories and direct them to help if required. If volunteers have additional skills such as how to use a de-fib or bleed kits etc Colchester City Council would be interested to possibly run workshops in the nearby venues.
During its residency Colchester City Council will have gazebos set up, resourced by Council staff and volunteers from all walks of life. Visitors to the statue will be encouraged to speak to us about the message that the Angel promotes. Colchester City Council are looking for volunteers to be present at this location who can talk to our visitors and explain why the statue is in Colchester.
There will be an area for our younger audience, with a colouring competition, and they can start a trail around Colchester City Centre bringing them back to the Angel, the trail will have 10 age-suitable questions highlighting the Angel’s message.
One of the conditions of hosting the Angel is to sign up people to promote this important message. Visitors can become ambassadors by taking the message back to schools, colleges and workspaces to encourage people to talk about the subject with their friends and families.
