Essex County Council are working in partnership with Colchester City Council to offer an opportunity for applications to be submitted to deliver the Community Supermarket in Greenstead. Along with applications for a Community Supermarket on Canvey Island, the Colchester project forms part of the ‘Bringing Community Supermarkets to Essex’ programme sponsored by Cllr Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council as a key strand of the County’s Levelling Up programme.
This opportunity comes hot on the heels of successes in Jaywick and Basildon where the Brooklands Community Shop (Jaywick) and Hope Community Supermarket (Laindon), set up as part of Phase 1, are collectively providing a service for over 375 members, shopping for over 620 adults and 340 children between them.
Over the last six months, they have been working with local stakeholders in Greenstead to promote this opportunity and to encourage local community groups to come together, and to develop collaborative proposals that are based on what the community wants to see, and what can add value to existing community assets.
The Colchester opportunity is supported by Shared Prosperity Funding (SPF) secured by CCC in 2022, and is being commissioned by Essex County Council under a programme that is seeking to work with communities to establish a Community Supermarket in every District by the end of the year.
