We are delighted to welcome Emily Wingate to Community360 who has joined us as the new lead for the Communities Can Physical Activities Project.

We caught up with Emily to find out more about this exciting project.

Welcome to Community360 Emily

  • Tell us about your role as the lead for the Communities Can Physical Activities Project.

The Communities Can Project is an amazing opportunity. I will be getting out and about in the community and working with other partners to find and create the perfect activity that gets people physically active.  Not just for a moment, but for life!  It’s my job and absolute pleasure to help our communities find that activity which will create a healthy habit and a healthy lifestyle.

  • What are the aims of the project?

Communities Can is all about facilitating our communities to reap the many benefits of physical activity. By working jointly with them to enable opportunities in physical activity in a way that suits them, their wants and their needs.

  • Who are you hoping to reach?

Initially, I am looking to reach community groups that C360 already have links with, for example the refugee groups, but as the role progresses, I would like to engage with new communities, particularly the elderly community and all ages within our target areas such as Greenstead and Monkwick.

  • What partners will you be working with?

I’m hoping to work with as many partners as possible to really reach as far as I can. Initially this will be with the University of Essex for facilities and volunteer coaches. I will also be working with Colchester Sixth Form, Colchester Institute, Changing Lives and RAMA.

  • What are your future plans for the project?

Not only do I want to get to hard-to-reach communities and provide them with opportunities to get active, but I’d also like to extend this to everyone working at Community360. Although I’m not sure what this will look like yet, a 5aside football team, netball team or a Friday yoga morning would be great!  But if anyone has any ideas of anything they would like to do then please do let me know!

  • Tell us something about yourself

Well, I am very passionate about sport myself!  My main hobby is that I play National League Netball for Billericay Netball Club, so my weekends are usually taken up by travelling around the country for games. The most outrageous (and by far, the most fun) is the weekends away to Jersey by plane, the hospitality whilst we are there is phenomenal – when we walk through the shops before the game all the locals know who we are, and we usually get discounted coffees!

  • How can we find out more about the activities?

If anyone is interested in finding out any more about the project, or has any ideas then feel free to email me emilywingate@community360.org.uk or call me on 01206 505250
