Building on the positive feedback received last year from the pilot of The Samaritans ‘Listening Skills and Emotional Health’ HEE have commissioned further training from The Samaritans.

Every six seconds, Samaritans answer a call for help, giving vulnerable people ways to cope.  Working with Health Education England and NHS England and Improvement, Samaritans will be sharing their skills and experience with staff in NHS commissioned crisis response services.

This training is for those who deliver telephone support and triage services for people in a mental health crisis and will be delivered through a series of virtual Listening Skills and Emotional Health courses . It will develop the participant’s active listening and response skills to enhance the support and care they provide.

The two-and-a-half-hour course will be delivered by an expert Samaritans facilitator who will use tools to encourage interaction and group learning. The courses will run between November 2022- March 2021 for up to 12 participants per session. This training will specifically help participants to:

  • assess their own and others’ emotional health using the Emotional Health Scale
  • use active listening skills to have supportive and effective conversations
  • signpost people to sources of additional support
  • consider ways to take care of their emotional wellbeing.

If you would like to book or find out more, please see the attached Listening Skills and Emotional Health digital course leaflet.  If you are a service manager of an NHS commissioned telephone response service and wish to discuss this training further, contact externaltraining@samaritans.org.
