Join Community360 for Let’s Walk Dementia sponsored walk, as part of the C360 Champion campaign to raise a Community Chest for the voluntary and community sector.
The 5k dementia friendly walk is for people living with dementia and their families, friends and carers. The aim is to break the stigma and social isolation surrounding dementia. The walk takes place around the scenic Abberton Reservoir on Saturday 6th October from 11am – 3pm.
Dementia is now the biggest killer. In 2017 the Pan Essex Dementia Action Alliance estimated there are 19,000 people in the whole of Essex living with dementia and this is predicted to rise to over 25,000 in the next ten years.
1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia and there are over 40,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK. It is estimated that 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. (Source: Alzheimer’s Society)
With so many people currently living with Dementia and the estimated rise in numbers, it is becoming increasingly important to focus on making communities’ dementia friendly.
Those taking part in Let’s Walk Dementia are asked to raise sponsorship for the event and in return will receive a certificate of achievement. Those that manage to raise £50 or more in sponsorship will be awarded the C360 Champion title and invited to a special awards ceremony at the Mayor’s Parlour in April, where they will receive a medal.
The money raised from the event will be added to a Community Chest for the voluntary and community sector, and will therefore be made available to others that are working to raise dementia awareness and make communities more dementia friendly.
This event is being sponsored by Stansted Airport Passenger Community Fund and supported by a host of organisations including; Essex Dementia Care; Dementia Action Alliance; Essex Wild Life Trust; Essex Search and Rescue; Gepps Solicitors (Chelmsford); Poplar Nurseries Ltd (Marks Tey).
