Local groups and organisations could benefit from additional funding to help them deliver new, or expand existing support for young people in Colchester during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has had an extraordinary impact on the lives of young people and Colchester Youth Strategy Group (YSG) – part of Essex Youth Service – is aiming to ensure there are appropriate resources and support available to help.

The group is looking to invest in and collaborate with local organisations, with a particular focus on support for young people’s mental health and wellbeing, staying safe and future opportunities.

There is a YSG in each district across the county and they are made up of local young people, elected councillors, local youth organisations and youth service staff. Their role is to organise, develop and commission youth services for local areas.

Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “It is clear that young people need support now more than ever and we’re pleased to be able to offer funding to help local organisations deliver this, in partnership with the local Youth Strategy Group.”

“We’ve already seen great success through innovative local projects, such as the Engage mentoring programme run by Lads Need Dads CIC, which paired young men in Colchester with a dedicated mentor who helped them to develop emotional and social confidence.”

“I would encourage any other local organisations who think they can help to come forward and find out more.”

Councillor Sue Lissimore, Chair of the Colchester YSG, said: “It has been a great experience chairing this group and in this current time I feel now more than ever it’s important we prioritise youth services.  If you are planning to develop youth provision in the district and are seeking financial and other support, the Colchester YSG would like to hear from you”.

Whether you are a new or existing group, or perhaps someone who would like to volunteer in youth work, the service is able to provide a range of dedicated support and resources.  These include access to training, DBS (criminal record) checks, use of premises and guidance on policies and practice.
