17th May 2018
Partners of the Colchester Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) are taking action and coming together for Dementia Action Week (21st – 27th May).
Awareness of dementia has increased greatly, and while raising awareness will remain important we must go further, we now need people to unite and take action on dementia to help create dementia friendly communities.
No action is too big or too small – whether you become a dementia friend and gain a bit more understanding about dementia, or you could spend time and reach out to someone with dementia for a chat. Every action makes a difference.
Members of the Colchester Dementia Action Alliance, which include Colchester Borough Council, Community360, Essex County Council and Alzheimer’s Society have joined together to host some activities in the local area to recognise Dementia Action week.
Lion Walk Activity Centre will host a range of activities taking place on the 23rd and 25th May. The activities are all free and will include a stall offering a range of useful information to take away, there are two ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions on the 23rd May, 11am-12noon and 1-2pm and one session on the 25th 1-2pm.
In addition to the dementia friends session on the 25th May, visitors are also welcome to join a ‘Songs & Memories’ session 11am -12noon.
Sessions are open to all, but with spaces limited, people are advised to book early by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 01206 282578.
Proceeds from a cake sale will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Colchester Leisure World will also be hosting a Dementia Friends session on 23rd May after their own ‘Songs and Memories’ session in Charter Hall 2 -3pm.
Sessions are open to all, people are advised to book by calling 0333 032 1399

Community360 is an independent charity Established in 1968 to assist charities, voluntary and community organisations in Colchester and Braintree (300+) through any activities which provide representation, enable development, encourage liaison, nurture strategic partnerships and provide support to promote voluntary action.
Our frontline services are developed in response to local needs and not only assist established community groups but are designed to address unmet needs, with project development defined by the communities we work with to improve their outcomes and life opportunities.
These include Community Development, Community Transport, Shopmobility, Volunteer Centre, Timebank and Community Accounts. We signpost members of the public, provide training for low level skills, apprenticeships and volunteer recruitment. Groups receive assistance on fundraising, business planning, constitutions, policies/procedures, monitoring/evaluation and Quality Marks.
