‘Seldom Heard’ Minority Ethnic Engagement Officer (EO B1)

‘Seldom Heard’ Minority Ethnic Engagement Officer (EO B1)

Here’s why you would want to apply for this role…

  • Because you want to support the minority ethnic groups, the voluntary sector and partners to build capacity and skills
  • To hone your coaching and specialist advice skills on governance, fundraising and volunteering to ethnic minority community organisations
  • You want job satisfaction

Colchester is a diverse borough with a growing ethnic minority population, particularly a growing younger ethnic minority generation.  There are many ethnic groups represented with a network of community organisations and these communities have many strengths but individuals experience real health inequalities.

Our experience shows that public services alone cannot currently reach and meet the needs of all our citizens, and that the best solutions are those that grow directly from the experiences and insights of citizens themselves. We also believe that by amplifying their voices, ethnic minority leaders can inspire true innovation and learning – with new ideas challenging historic ways of doing things.

Strengthen Capacity

  • Provide tailored training on leadership and Asset-Based Community Development for ethnic minority leaders
  • Support the development of ethnic minority leadership
  • Act as single point of commissioning for micro-grants to build the capacity of ethnic minority community groups

Build Integration

  • Establish an ethnic minority Health and Wellbeing Forum in partnership with local citizens, VCS, Statutory and Health Care partners to address health care inequalities and wellbeing challenges as identified in the key themes above
  • Facilitate meaningful ties between ethnic minority community organisations and whole-system partners
  • Support ethnic minority leaders to contribute to shaping local policies and services
  • Support inter-community events

Tackle inequalities

  • Research and develop new communication channels for public health messages, recognising that ethnic minority voices and leadership are integral to shaping the discussions and decision making in tacking health inequalities and wellbeing challenges.
  • Explore the potential for clinics and surgeries targeted at ethnic minority communities

This role is diverse and requires the following:

  • Experience in a similar environment. The ability to deliver work with communities
  • Good project delivery experience
  • Proven line management skills
  • The ability to multi-task within a dynamic, fast paced, and changing environment
  • A “can do” attitude with innovative ideas and the ability to overseeing the delivery of services on time, efficiently and in accordance with relevant key performance indicators, ensuring a high-quality customer focus service at all times

About us

Situated at the heart of the local voluntary and community sector since 1968, we are an independent, charitable infrastructure organisation whose aim is to inspire groups to seize opportunities and become more enterprising and sustainable.  Our front-line services are developed in response to local needs and not only assist established community groups but are designed to address unmet needs, with project development defined by the communities we work with to improve their outcomes and life opportunities.
